This is a frustrating issue I have discovered while trying to work with PTEX and Mudbox. I have a mesh with 5 subdivision levels; I export the level 3 mesh to Maya with the intention of adding a Normal Map to cover the rest of the detail. But Mudbox thinks otherwise.

Mudbox will only let you export maps to a level 0 target mesh if you want to use the PTEX SETUP in Texel Distribution.  I get the following error when I try to extract: “Use PTEX Setup” can only be selected if the target mesh is already set up for PTEX. Extraction works great though when the target mesh is at level 0.

I don’t understand why this is the case, and it is causing some headaches. Any chance this could be resolved? Any workarounds for this?

Thanks!

Could you maybe try using the Transfer details option to copy your paint from your original low res mesh to the new level3 mesh you’ve created?
