I am looking to purchase a new computer box. My main question is in regards to Maya, 3Ds-Max and RealFlow. I have been trying to figure out the best box for calculating Fluids and Rendering. So far I am going back and forth from a i7 or a Xeon setup, but mainly the graphics card is where I am getting stuck. I have been looking into the GTX 680 sli or GTX 690. Along with a Tesla card and 32gb of ram. Would it be better to stick with a Quadro card in processing dynamics or would it not be much of an issue with the consumer based card 680/690 due to the many Cuda cores and Nivida no longer making Performance drivers? Also is it worth while to have a Nvidia Tesla card using those sorts of programs? Any Ideas for a good setup? Any information would be awesome! I've been doing freelance graphics and photography for roughly 15 years now but when I got the chance to go back to college for an art degree, I jumped on it. Anyways, I've come to the conclusion that I -really- need a second computer here for my video work. Now PLEASE...before I get into this, I am -NOT- interested in a Mac. Please do not waste the bandwidth or my time telling me how great they are...I've spend the past year using one in lab at school and I DO NOT LIKE THEM...it's not going to happen so PLEASE don't bother if that's all you have to say. If I ever get a paying position where I -have- to use Macs, I'll probably get one otherwise, this is for home and school use and I have no interest in them -AT ALL-. Ok...the system I'm planning on building is going to be pretty strictly dedicated to the video work, both 3D animation stuff via Maya and more traditional video stuff (I'm not into HD yet but that's probably coming too). The video work I create tends to have a wide range of uses...most goes on DVD at some point, some is for class assignments (and thus needs to be high quality) and a few even go on Youtube...and of course copies of the really good stuff usually go in my portfolio (again on DVD). Now I'm quite happy with my current system for doing my photography and other art work...I mainly want this second system so that when I have video rendering (via Maya or other apps), I can continue to work on other things like my photography...I think it's call "multi-tasking", LOL! I -can- render video on my current system and have done so, but it ties up the machine so that I can't really do much of anything else while the vid's rendering (especially some of my Maya animations that can take up to 8 hours or more). The intended software is going to be Adobe Premeire and After Effects (CS4 if it matters) as well as Maya and Max (I'm mainly a Maya user however for some of my school projects I've used Max to convert a few files...some internet freebies to use as "fill" and such). The main issues I'm wrestling with are "off the shelf" or "build my own" and in either case, CPU. As of right now, my budget is about $500...I'm -trying- to get that up to around $800 but for the moment I know I have $500 to work with (via an art scholarship, otherwise I wouldn't be doing this at all). Normally I'd just build my own as I usually get a lot more bang for the buck that way, but I've been looking at some refurb'd HP's and such at MicroCenter that seem like pretty sweet deals for under $400. In fact they have an IBM with the new core i7, 2 500 gig hdd's and 12 gigs of RAM for $800 that I'm -seriously- considering (again -if- I can get the money). BTW...the intended OS is going to be Windows XP64...if I go with off the shelf, I'll take whatever I get (probably Windows 7) but if I build my own, I'm sticking with XP64 as it's been real good to me. I'm also planning on a pair of fast 500 gig harddrives and if I build my own, at least 4 gigs of RAM, if not 8. Sadly I'll probably have to skimp on the video...and I -know- Maya is a little fussy about vid cards, but that's something I'll have to address later as an upgrade at some point. The single biggest question I have really is; Intel or AMD? I've always been a fan of AMD and both my wife's computer (set up for her programming stuff...she's an apps developer) and my studio system (music/recording) are both AMD's and they've both been decent computers...they do what we need them to do. That said, I also have to admit that this Intel system I have now (home built Q6600 quad core with Intel motherboard) has been a GREAT PC...best I've ever owned. Mainly I'm getting rather confuzzled by the sea of options out there with CPU's...Core 2 Duo, Dual Core, Quad, i3, i5, i7, Athlon II, Phenom, x2, x4, x6...it's really gotten a little crazy in recent years. Obviously I want the best that I can afford, but I really don't know if there's something that would work better for video work than others and I've also heard that some of these CPU's have heat issues, etc (and no...I don't over-clock). Obviously video rendering is rather resource intensive, so it's issues like this that I'm trying to take into consideration. Likewise, I'm a bit confuzzled about the whole dual core vs. quad core thing too. Might I not get better performance using a faster dual core than a slower quad core (or six core) since this system is again going to be limited to just the video stuff? Now the main reason I'm concerned with the AMD vs. Intel issue is that I really have no experience at all with video on AMD processors so I really don't know how well they perform, if there are any issues, etc., etc.. Most of the refurb'd systems I am considering are AMD based systems (such as the HP's) so if there are issues with video or Maya, etc., in regard to AMD, I need to know whether I should even be considering those systems or not. So there ya go...I know that's a bit long, but I'm grateful for any comments or suggestions ya'll can provide. Thank you! 2012-05-15T09:16:20+02:00 Paint Effects Panel Broken - 2012 sp2 http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-maya/installation---hardware---os/paint-effects-panel-broken---2012-sp2/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-maya/installation---hardware---os/paint-effects-panel-broken---2012-sp2/page-last/#When:07:54:26Z Brushing up on Paint Effects, Pfx Panel badly broken. Long story short, I'm a student and am having trouble installing the student version of Maya 2012. I download the .exe directly from the Autodesk website, and when I open it, it begins to extract hundreds of cabinet files (you know, the usual). However, one of two situations will then occur: 1) one of every five or so lines of .cab files are in red, and begin with "CRC failed" instead of "extracting...", and my entire computer shortly crashes into the dreaded blue screen of death. 2) most of the lines of .cab files are fine, but one to three are red and the installation ends with a prompt telling me to download a fresh copy of the installer and try again. (which I've done several times now) Sometimes there are 2 "CRC failed"s, sometimes there are forty, but every time the process I go through is the same and I can safely say I have NO idea what's going on -- I've checked and both the version I'm downloading and my computer are 64-bit, and I meet all of the video requirements and more. If it helps, here are the three errors from the last run I tried: CRC failed in x64DirectConnectDirectConnect6.0.cab CRC failed in x64DirectConnectInventorServerDM.msm.cab CRC failed in x64Compositeruntime.cab Hopefully, Wharrison 2012-05-15T07:24:21+02:00 Question About Buying a Used Copy of Maya http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-maya/installation---hardware---os/question-about-buying-a-used-copy-of-maya/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-maya/installation---hardware---os/question-about-buying-a-used-copy-of-maya/page-last/#When:06:40:30Z Are there any risks to buying a used copy of Maya online?
