I get an error message when trying use RPF 32 bit files in After Effects CS55 that I made from Max 2012. If I save the image to a RPF 8 bit it works fine. Is this a Max or AE bug?

It’s less a bug than AE not being caught up with Max in 32bit RPF support. It will accept other 32bit color files, like EXR for instance. My issue is that the EXR files are insanely large: almost 24MB per frame for 1080 HD resolution. Yes, per frame! At some point I need to figure out all the compression choices that EXR has. So far the documentation on EXR is spotty at best.

Instead I have been using MR elements files for things like DOF (which looks better anyway) and separate passes. That way you can use compressed PNG and smaller files for sub layers. But for wider or floating point color depth it appears the various companies are not all on the same page at the moment, which makes it confusing for users just trying to get work done.

I will look into EXR compression and report back if I get a chance.

Ok, I’ll stop trying to get it to work then. Thanks for pointing this out. I have done some test with z-depth render passes using Frischluft for AE, but I have major problems with edge defects. I hoped that using 32 bit would solv this.
