Can I add Spline IK controller to the line path used in a loft if the original line path is deleted?

I draw spline curve then create a circle.
I create a loft with get shape selecting circle so now I have snake.

Now the question:
Can I add Spline IK controller to the line path used in a loft if the original line path is deleted and have it still generate Helpers?

If you go in the modifier subselection area you can see the Line and you can highlight it and select the Spline IK Controller and it seems to add it but then it wont let you “create Helpers”.
Meaning that button does nothing.
