Hi, i'm new user and i got a trial version on cgtalk for Uplift Challenge.

I glance throw some tutorials to improve my skill in XSI, but i got a problem that tutorials don't about.
i activated global illumination with some models created before (*.obj files). And a message appear bottom screen when i do a region render.

>> RCGI 0.3 error 361001: photon emission shader returned miFALSE: aborting photon tracing

I hope someone could give an issue.
Thanks ahead.

David.

You have to enable and adjust Gi Photons in lights aswell.
You have also to mark "Rebuild Map" in the render settings > GI,until you are satisfied.
By default any objects in the scene are GI casters and receivers. You may check also their appearing for that in the visibillity options for each object.

Ok, I did that, so I wonder if infinite light can emit photon, cause i switched with a spotLight and it works. But I didn't reach What I wanted, cause i need a large source of photon.

Thanks Ewald ;)

Infinite won't emmit photons.
Its better to use a new created spot light or light box as photon emitter.
Select the photon emitter light, press letter "b" and adust falloffs and angles directly in the
viewport by mousclick and moving the cones.
Notice that, when the yellow cone is sharp angled photons are emitted faster and more focused on that area.Probably that won't give you the result you need.
Cheers,and good luck.

Thanks Ewald, Lightbox seems to be a nice idea. i'll also try to do something with finalGathering options and environment.

Thanks.

Hi, perhaps you may want to have a look at our training on mental ray within XSI. We cover all the aspects of mental ray you are mentioning, including how to use them from a production standpoint.

Infinite won't emmit photons.

Just a note that in my limited experience this isn't entirely true. I was able to emit photons through the infinite light created with the initialize sky shader and with the physical sun shader on the light. The intensity had to be cranked down to 3 or thereabouts. I'm not saying this is the only way this will work just that I was able to get it to work in this way.
