You can go through Rhino 3D (try the evaluation version).

try "deep exploration" from righthemisphere.
there is a fully functional 30 day evaluation available at

Thanks for DeepExploration solution but I can't understand how it's so hard to put a good around import / export files to XSI...?

Does XSI users only work with XSI, obj or 3ds file format?

xsi is weak when it comes to cad formats and is in general supporting only little 3d formats.
i have a old copy of max around for these reasons.

anyway, i remember that there used to be a plugin, for xsi, importing dxf. try to dig it up on xsibase.com, if its any useful for you.

You could also ask autodesk, why it is so difficult to have some good exporters from autocad? To ie IGES or OBJ. IGES export was support in R14, but for "some" reason it disappeared.

That said, a good dwg import would be nice.

I don't launch the rock to the XSI head !

But in all kinds of pipeline users must works with differents files formats as the works ressources are from...

As XSI are for many users the earth of a pipeline or call it production workflow in my language...I think XSI must be open to be quickly and friendly usable in my case of uses, eg. Anim, film, game, VR, Viz,...

I know also many here consideratign xsi as the most / best ;) animation tools but XSI can do really more than "just" animating. The modeling tools, mentalray integration, compositing etc give XSI an all around kind of 3d application, all around but most focus on film and vfx (until yet ?)

I agree that Autodesk and the rest! aren't always the best with import/export but when i work (I use it from 10 years ago) in 3ds max I have a lots of include import/export.

I don't understand why XSI are not more open and support Files formats like dxf, dwg, vrml97, x3d, STL,...
I know there is DXF import Plug-in (thanks to his autor!) but we can maybe give users life easy and don't ask to dig the web for import/export plug-in search...

Just include the most basic industries files formats to give XSI a great 3d application open to all the most common industries tasks.

See Modo, Luxology when created modo 101 understood that's modo must be first opened to all as it's at basic a great modeler !

In this way Luxology always get in mind to includes import/export for the most common industries tasks...now modo can also import Rhino and Sketchup...

I know also Dot XSI file format is open and you can say me why others softwares don't integrating dot XSI ? for Sure Autod€sk don't probably :-)

Here is my point of view about this and I hope you understand in the right way my english (sorry I'm french speacking)

i totally agree with you....
actually.. i think this might change soon. with vray available at some time for xsi, other ppl will migrate, like some archivz folks, and raise the same opinion. if enough ppl do, soft will do something about it.

My work-around is to import .dwg to sketchup and, export the layers you need from sketchup as .xsi with the export edges option checked and, units set to model units

It will be cool to hear from softimage why there's no .dwg import support for xsi. Autodesk may probably have a chokehold on the format.
It would be cooler still to have just plain importers .dwg, .3ds .fbx .ma etc instead of crosswalk, which has crashed or frozen 100% of the time i've tried to use it.

Hi,

Thanks for the tips, i discovered yesterday also that's Sketchup pro can export to .dot XSI !

Importing DWG into Sketchup and exporting to .dot XSI work fine in most of case, Measures was not accurate or totaly trashed but that's not what's I need.

I just need to get drawing shape and layers with correct colours check.

As Sketchup DO an .dot XSI export, we can also ask why others don't do ?! Marketing probably...So that's true CrossWalk crash often and when I said XSI import/Export is the dark side, peoples who love XSI (I'm loving XSI but I will stay on the ground) Flame me because XSI is not perfect, they probably don't go in / out from XSI or work in closed pipeline...

But again, in industry Imports / exports look like the down side in many softwares, not only XSI !
