I downloaded my trial Essentials for the CG Challenge and got the license applied as per the instructions, but when I launch Essentials it says it expires in 20 days in the title bar, even though the license is supposed to be good until 6/18/2008.
Did I do something wrong when I installed the license?

There is a known problem with the XSI title bar...when you have a Trial license installed, then the title bar always shows "Expires in XX days", even if you also have another, longer-term license installed and you are running the other license.
To see what license you are using
- Start the License Manager
- click Server > Query License Server and then click Run Query
- Look at the "used" column
The problem goes away when the Trial license expires.
The Trial and the CG Talk license are both for Essentials, so if you have both installed, it should not be a problem. After the Trial expires you will still have the CG Talk license.

Hiya.
I can't even get that far. :(
I DL'ed, installed, and followed the license instructions that were emailed to me from Softimage. I put in my username and password, hit "Update"...pause for a few seconds...and a "Dongle ID" shows up in the bottom drop-down list. Thing is, no licenses show up under "Unassigned Licenses". So I can't select one and click "Assign" (everything's still greyed out).
Any suggestions?
(PS: 64-bit version running on WinXP Pro x64).

If the Unassigned Licenses list is empty, please send your softimage.com logon name and a request code to Softimage Support (support@softimage.com).
To generate a request code:
Start the License Manager (click Start > All Programs > Softimage Products > License Manager).
Click Manage Key Database.
Click Generate Request Code.
If you get an error, click Rename Key Database and try again.
Click Save.
Send the .req file, which by default is saved in C:\spm.

Hiya.
I've been talking with a SI rep and we're still trying to figure out the problem. So far we've determined a few things...one which could be a problem. The thing we found is that my install isn't even registering as a "Trial" license; when I click "Get Trial", it goes through the motions of getting a trail license (requesting, sending, receiving), but says:
Generating new request code... done
Getting trial license... done
Warning: expired trial version
It is my understanding that the CGTalk 'license' kinda sits 'on top of' the normal trial license...but, as it keeps thinking my trial license is expired, nothing happens.
Anyway, just an FYI for where I (and probably SI; seems I'm not the only one with this problem) are at right now...

The Get Trial behavior you describe is normal, assuming you did get a trial license at some point, more than a month ago.
To get your CGTalk license, you do Get License > Assign Licenses.

That would work...but we (the other posters in this thread) don't have *anything* show up in the box where you would normally see a list of licenses. Because there isn't any license on the list (btw, there is no "spm-kf" or any kind of .keys file to be found), the "Assign" button on the "Assign Licenses" 'page' is greyed out. The problem is that there isn't any license to assign...trial or otherwise. We do the 'Update', it finds us a Dongle ID (at the drop down at the bottom of the page), but nothing shows up in the Unassigned Licenses...so the "Assign" button is greyed out.

Hi
As I already wrote above (http://community.softimage.com/showpost.php?p=3027&postcount=6) in this thread, if your Unassigned Licenses list is empty, please send your softimage.com logon name and a request code to Softimage Support.

I also haven't heard anything yet...I did get a confirmation email:
( "Your email has been received by our team. Our commitment is to respond
within no more than 2 business days by either:
-providing you with your license(s) or the answer to your question(s)
-asking you to clarify some information. ")
But as far as I know I haven't gotten any emails back. I don't usually use my hotmail account for stuff like this, but since it was my cgtalk email account, I had to use it for the XSI essentials challenge.

That confirmation email is from License@softimage.com.
If you contact support@softimage.com, I'll see if I can help.

Hi Stephen,
Is it possible to have the license installed in my desktop and notebook?
I am up and running in my desktop, but I couldn't make it work in my laptop.
I had XSI FND 6.02 trial previously installed that has already expired, so, after installing XSI6.5 ESS, when I try "Get TRIAL" from License Manager I receive a message saying "Trial expired".
Ok, but I thought I could install the CGtalk challenge license and get it running, but in fact, it didn't work since there is no license listed to assign to the dongle.
So, I'm guessing I can't make it work because I'm using the same license as in my desktop, right?
Thanks,
Felipe

The CG Challenge license is tied to a specific computer, and you get one license only.
So after you assign it on one computer, that is it.

Hello,
I've submitted my final entry to the CG Society Challenge.
Please advise how I can now avail of the Non-Commercial Licence.
Thanks.
Cheers!

Hi
The non-commercial licenses will be available after the contest ends.

Hi Stephen, just a quick question on when we get the non-commercial licence, will this work the same way? Install on one machine, or will we be able to have it on two machines, our Laptop and Desktop machine? Just so I don't install on the Desktop and discover I can't get it onto my Laptop. I don't want to stop learning while I go away on holidays.
Thanks,
Kuanbyr

Yes, the permanent license will work the same way.
For 6.5, we don't have the general licensing infrastructure in place to support the deactivation and re-activation of licenses (and that would allow you to move the license from one computer to the other).

Hi,
it' been said that the license will change from CG Challenge to Non-Commercial directly at the end of the contest. Well, for Image entry the deadline was the 12th of May. For those who has submitted a final image like me, how can we know if our license has changed or not?
Thanks in advance :).

Hi Michele
After the contest finishes, and the permanent licenses are available, we will notify the contestants. When that happens, you will use the License Manager to activate your permanent license on the computer of your choice (it can be a different computer from the computer where your contest license was activated).
