I want to port Enhance:XSI textures over to Linux. Can anyone tell me which Llinux works easily (latest distributions)?
In addition, I have a windows license server which is easy to add more Windows machines to by simply typing the name a of the main machine as the server. Can this be done as easily when adding a Linux box?
TIA

there has been many discussions about unbuntu not working with xsi. i am no linux expert, but something about it being a debian based distro.
only supported platforms are listed here...

Interesting, the only Linux I have managed to load on my machine and have XSI working is Ubunutu 7.10. This is a problem with windows taking a age to appear (i.e. press 7 and wait 20 seconds for the rendertree windows to come up). Other than that it works fine and renders quickly. The whole XSI Linux things seems far from definitive so any more insight would by great.

i remembered this thread...

and just wrote off unbuntu and xsi. i went back to that thread just now and noticed someone did get it running.
well good luck with your port, i can't be of any help since linux isn't really my department, i am still learning myself

Currently fedora core5 is the easiest to live with, fedora core7 will still work and is more updated, and in the near future hopefully the official target platform will become fedora core8 (which at present time is tricky to get to run xsi on).
For a newcomer I would say fc5 as a no-problem porting platform, or fc7 for a laptop or more moderrn platform.
In addition, I have a windows license server which is easy to add more Windows machines to by simply typing the name a of the main machine as the server. As long as your Linux box can see and talk to that box through tcp/ip you should be able to obtain a token from it to license xsi.
As easy to use as it is, and as neat as it might appear as a starting point, I would really not reccomend Ubuntu for DCC of any kind.

Thorax please remember this is a Softimage forum, not some random board for delirious OSS rants about the nobility of abstract software regardless of companies, jobs or users.
If you can keep your comments pertinent to the subject of a thread and the spirit of the forum, good, if you can't please find elsewhere to post.
