got the head done now so into the interior next. Also got the undercarriage and head rigged now. I'm no rigging expert so its a bit quick and dirty, but it works!

Thanks mate, yes i am going to look at some animation with this one. I need to get hold of a character i can turn into a pilot and rig as i never get around to modeling my own

Hey Giant551,
It's looking amazing! I'm curious... how are these animations done in terms of the main rotor? I mean, during start up it seems pretty obvious but afterwards, when the engine revs up, is it a 2D blur in compositing or full 3D? If 3D, is the real rotation kept low leaving the whole work to the blur effect? If so, according to what I read, this seems to be a job for 3Delight...

Good luck and keep on posting updates!

Thank you guys i really appreciate your comments! As for the motion blur Leo i just normally use the 3d motion blur ive had some pretty good results in the past. Ive downloaded the demo of 3delight so i'll have a look at it. Not heard much about it is it worth looking into??

Thanks christophe its a real compliment from you i've seen your work and its really nice:clap:

Hey Giant551,

As far as I followed, 3Delight is supposed to be ultra fast in the motion blur rendering department, though there has been mixed opinions about the quality/accuracy of this very feature. You should be able to come to your own conclusions after browsing these two topics and experimenting yourself:
XSIbase (http://www.xsibase.com/forum/index.php?board=29;action=display;threadid=34917;s tart=255)
Softimage|Net (http://community.softimage.com/showthread.php?t=216&highlight=3delight)

Beware that the 64-bit demo version has just been released, so... get your hands dirty!!! :)

got another chunk done, the cabin a cockpit interior and the doors. I took a bit of time off this week so things have slowed a little:whistling:

Superb!! I'd love to see an animation of the doors opening... hehehe...

I have a question for you, Giant551, since you model all these incredibly realistic helos in polys, what do you have to say about the imperfections of XSI's geometry smoothing people have been discussing about? What's your take on the nurbs x polys for realistic modeling of non-organic objects?

Leo.

Sorry for the late reply Leo. Well i came from a nurbs background, i used rhino for a few years before coming over to poly's.

Nurbs are good for certain things and can be very accurate and fast to model with, but having used both, poly's win for me with this type of modeling. It gives you far more control and you are able to constantly tweak the shape of your mesh a lot easier than point pulling a nurbs surface

Nurbs are very good for concept work and product design but if your modeling a real world object i would stick to poly's especially in XSI as the nurbs in my honest opinion are not very good for complex modeling.

cheers

Paul

Hey Paul, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject. I've been reading about this and trying to collect impressions from people in the know because I have no experience with nurbs whatsoever. Actually, I know sqwat about modeling in general but my tiny experience has been with polys and since I'm more interested in non-organic modeling I started to wonder if I should shift my focus to nurbs. Then again, it's not the first time I hear people expressing their dissatisfaction with the nurbs toolset in XSI. So if I decided for nurbs, I'd prolly have to start fresh in another (complementary) package and that's a no, no for me.

Thanks again,
Leo.

Sweeeet!!! Are you planning on rigging/constraining the yoke, pedals and cyclic to their appropriate parts in the rotors??

Hey Giant551,

Looking really cool!
I don't know if you're done with the texturing or not so I might be getting ahead of myself here... anyway, I'd suggest that you work on weathering the whole panel structure to give it that realistic look of used stuff. Also, you might want to do something with the MFDs so that they look more "pixel based" (add some horizontal refresh lines, maybe?) because right now they look a bit like decals.

I'm sure all of this is already on your plans so you might as well just ignore my comment... hehehe....

Keep it up!
Leo.

Well here it is the finished model. I will be doing some more renders and some animation with this puppy soon as i get a couple of minutes spare!!

Anyway i'm very pleased how this has come out, i hope you have enjoyed following the progress as much as have building it!

Good work!! You reach a good result Paul.

If I have to crit something... The images are very good if you want an illustration that emphasize the design of the helicopter. Less if you want a realistic image. In this case the heli requires a bit of work to the texture and shaders.
The same for the cockpit, that I like for the details.

Superb, man!! Looking forward to the animations... but it makes me wonder how you plan to go about the crew.

Best of luck!
