View Full Version : me and organic modeling?

Hello im doing 3d since 3 or 4 years now,but my big problem is im always depressed when i see people say that "its my first model" and it look so amazing to me,because im trying to achieve the same result for long time now,so now i think that im not for modeling,i try to know if some people specialize in organic modeling and some other in mechanic modeling,and solid object,should i stop to force the things and try another things like solid modeling.
do you know some people whot specialize in non organic modeling.

As a modeler, you need to be capable doing both. At some stage, based on your projects or your personal preferences, you may model solid more than organics, or vise-versa, it shouldn't limit you to learn one thing and give up the other thing. There's no half-modeler, IMO. :wink:

There's an awful lot of learning sources these days, organics or solids, you can 'easily' get the best of both worlds.

I can tell you I'm not so good in organic modeling, cos it often needs good sense of anatomy as well as proportion. Thats why you should start from there. If you've got good sense of anatomy, you just need to drag some polys and edges.

and surely you can do it even easier with brush-based modeling like ZBrush or Mudbox.

I wouldn't get too disheartened, there's a lot of people claiming something they've made is their first model and it's usually BS, in most cases it's just someone's first posted model or it's a model they've created by following a tutorial to the letter whilst modifying the final look. Though there are the occasional few that are guenuinely gifted, these are the people we all love to hate :)

If you really want to improve your skills but feel that you’re struggling, then I suggest posting some WIP images and asking for some constructive criticism, I guarantee that the people in this community will be more than happy to offer advice that will improve your skills.

thanks,i have no sense of anatomy or i need to learn it,but i want to focuse on character animation and rigging,but when i see amazing model i am always impressed,so i want to do good model even if i know that this will not be my profession.

Maybe you've got no sense of anatomy (like me, more or less) but 'technically' you can do that, so if you're asked to model a character based on a detailed drawing concept, you still can do it well.

Like Dave said, never hesitate to show your work, there are many experts in this forum to offer you good advice, and we can learn this together.

I think you really need to study/learn about anatomy through repetition and just being around it, in traditional 2D art I was horrible with anatomy and proportion, but after 6 months of trying to do it right and using guides and studying, I can now just "free-ball-it" with decent results.

I haven't tired too much 3D organic, but it seems like I got some since of anatomy but it also seems like its very linear, so I need to learn how to use it in 3D, you should defiantly use orthographic drawings when modeling, I can't really say this for certain, but at some point you may be able to just "free-ball-it" in 3D if your good enough at it,

Everyone has weak points, you just need to work on them instead of avoiding them.

I have to agree with Zac, if you have a weakness, then you should attack it at all costs. Else, you will never overcome it. Keep practicing and working on it. Even if it has been 3-4 years, so long as you achieve the results at some point in time, it's better than nothing. Don't give up and keep on going; you are your only limitation.

i cant model any organic shape, i cant draw a single line straight and i don't waste time trying to be great at it, when there are so many ppl out there who can do such things with ease.

i am great at organizing, i can animate decent, i can write scripts and i can rig characters, i can set light and create a working shader, and i can push ppl to deliver great results because i can judge their work.

so i better concentrate on what i CAN and get better at that, then trying to do everything but mediocre.

this only works in a studio environment though. if you are all alone its getting harder. but even as a freelancer you usually sell only your strongest skill.
i think its really important to see where your talent lies and build on that. i get so much demo reels where i see ppl who try to do everything, but i have no chance to hire them, because there is no skill at the level where i need it.

some people are naturally talented for doing things,and i think i have no enough background for making model like zak petroc or bay rait,because of so much effort in modeling i have no strong point in other 3d part,so now i will try then try until i fing what im good for.

I feel your pain elfenomeno, i've been modeling for about 18 months and all I can make is mechanical and solid objects, I just make low-poly models for a game that I mod and I try to keep the tri count under 5000 whenever possible, I would post some pics of my work on this site but I would probably be laughed right off the internet after seeing all of the masterpieces posted by all of these great artist here.

maybe try to figure out what makes most fun for you. for me it was always to move/animate things. so i learn what it takes to make a object/character animatable (rigging) to finally enjoy the thing i like most... watching MY stuff moving across the screen and somebody who watches it feeling with it :)

usually when you feel very happy doing something, you can also become very good at doing it... with time :)
