Hi guys!
Todays i started working on a small animation that will be made after a 2d drawing by Michael Kutsche. More about him and his great work here (http://www.mistermk.de/).
The rig and animation will be done by digeijohn but until then i have to make the robot and the scene...

Here is the 2d image that will be the source of the animation:

Hey guys!
Thanks a lot for your kind words and support.

Here is the gun, will be 2 guns attached to the back, one left, one right, they will unfold from inside the body when the robot is in action.
There are still some minor things that i want to add/change but basically this is how it will look. With all this cables will be a hell to rig :D good luck digeijohn :p

i was always impressed bu this kind of mechanical modeling, and i wonder how can you get so far in detail with only one concept art?
do you have other blueprints, detailed drawing, how do you get into such detail you model each little part separatly and then combine,it is one mesh...
this is the kind of question that i asking to myself.

can you pleas break down mecha-modeling for me,what is the technique, the secret behing the modeling of so massive robot,do you start from piece and go to another?

do some people specialize in mechanic modeling and other people in creature modeling?

thx and excuse for my crappy english.

Hey guys!
Sorry for the late response and little progress, girlfriend is in town :D

Now, about the modeling process, it's nothing tricky or secret, i just start building the part that is most visible and use the design elements from that part as a common theme for the rest of the parts are aren't (so) visible. Sometime, rarely, i merge objects into one mesh (bolts, etc) but most of the time during the modeling process i like to be able to change, rearrange, reuse the object as much as possible. I usually spend a day before i start working on an unknown part of the robot trying to figure out in my mind how that part should be designed so that it will look consistent with the rest of the robot, i don't have drawing skills so i rarely put something down on paper.

Here is the head, nothing fancy.

I also start modeling the main body and i had some troubles figuring out the main shape this is the cause for the lack of the updates.
The body is wip, and i also have to model the legs and also probably to add/change some details to tight all the parts together.

Here are some ugly printscreens with the body, what do you think?

Hey Adrian,

Your modeling is top notch!
After referring to what you've accomplished so far and the reference image back and forth, I have the **feeling** the main body should be a bit wider. I know it's all covered up in the reference image, but still... Just a feeling though...

Keep it up!

Zac and Leo, you are right about the proportions! After a few hours break from working at the robot I'm seeing what you are saying and I'll correct the problem asap. Thanks for bringing this up!

03-24-2008, 08:52 PM
IMO the original design really reminds me of a crab, the pose and the 2 big claws, also kinda ape like, not too spider like besides the head, (just trying to give you ideas how to judge the scale and what it looks like from different angles.

Adrian Lazar
03-25-2008, 05:02 AM
I made a pose and a camera that match the original image and looks quite similar, plus, i also need to make the legs and add some details that are missing right now like the tubes from the side so it's likely that the proportions will change a bit (more closer to the original image).

Leo
03-25-2008, 05:01 PM
Hey Adrian, I have a silly question for you...
Would you mind sharing the rendertree you've been using to display your progress? I'm a beginner and I use an AO Pass to generate renders of WIPs when I want to show then to other people, but yours look soooo much better...

Thx,
Leo.

Adrian Lazar
03-26-2008, 07:42 AM
Hey Leo!
Usually for the final image i render different passes like ao, shadow, color ... but for wip i prefer to have a good result fast without having to use fusion to compose the render passes and for this I combine an ambient occlusion shader with a phong or blinn (usually with specular off). The render tree is very very very simple. In the example bellow the colors are defined by the ao shader but sometimes i plug this shader in the weight parameter for the mix2colors and use 2 phong shaders for base_color and color1 node, on phong shader having a darker color.
http://www.reactive4.com/stuff/bug_robot/render_tree.jpg

I also try to avoid final ghatering and i prefer to use multiple lights, the lights in the right have a blue color, the one in the left an orange color and one "SUN" light that gives the main light direction (it's brighter than the others) and cast the shadow:
http://www.reactive4.com/stuff/bug_robot/scene.jpg
Oh, the two cylinder, the box and the circle are my toolbox, the primitives that i use most, i prefer to duplicate those because are setup (subdivision number, etc...) the way i like so i don't have to change this settings every time i create a new object from the modeling panel.

And here are 2 renders with the wip body... i still have a lot to do besides the 2 legs.

03-26-2008, 09:21 AM
Thanks a lot, Adrian!! I will most definitely try your approach on my next WIP render :D Seems simple enough and yet produces a clean and elegant result.

The robot's torso is coming together nicely! I was wondering if you'll be the one rigging it afterwards. With all these cables around it should prove very interesting and informative for a noob llike myself... I know nothing about rigid/soft bodies or how collisions are handled... hehehe

Thanks again!!

Adrian Lazar
03-26-2008, 09:32 AM
Thanks man, no, the rigging will be done by a work colleague and friend of mine but he will post the wip's here.

Hey Adrian,

For your WIP render setup, what kinds of lights are you using? Are they all point lights? I can't really tell from your screenshot.

Also, what settings are you using for your shadows?

Thanks for the info!
~Mechis

Leo
03-30-2008, 12:08 PM
Hey Mechis,

While you wait for Adrian's reply, I just wanted to let you know I tried his shader/lighting setup and got some pretty sweet results! :)
To me, it only made sense if all lights were point lights with soft intensity and no shadows and, as he instructed, just one bright sun light casting shadows. Experiment! I'm sure you'll have fun with your findings. :)

Leo.

mechis
03-30-2008, 12:43 PM
Thanks. I was trying to do it too and used point lights, which looked pretty good (still thought I should ask about the lights though)... heh. Glad to know you were thinking the same as I was :)

Also, my shadow on the ground plane didn't (the edges of the shadow don't have the nice gradation that are in Adrian's WIP renders). Maybe the sun shouldn't be a point light?

Thanks!
~Mechis

Adrian Lazar
04-07-2008, 09:42 AM
Hey mechis, there are all point lights just as leo said. The main light cast an area shadow with a big radius (you can see this from the screenshot) and this is why the shadows have thost gradation on the edges.

I'm quite busy right now so there aren't any big updates, i start working at the legs, i know that the foot isn't similar with the original concept but i didn't have a lot of time to figure out how it looks in 3d so i did a new one.

04-07-2008, 05:00 PM
Looking great, Adrian!
Considering how dark your reference image is in this area, I'd say you did a great job and comparing to the other parts you've already developed, it *makes sense*.
My single criticism is that the cap where he knee cap is supposed to be could be a tad bit bigger. Maybe it's just a rigging thing, meaning that when posed like the original image it may look right the way it is now.

Anyways, keep it up!!
Leo.

I did finish the modelling, unfortunately I have to redo the parts that grip the gun because they don't match with the robot so I'll post the entire model when is 100% ready.
Until then and being tired of modelling I start working on shaders.

are working on single texture for single obj ?

Adrian Lazar
04-22-2008, 09:26 AM
Hi guys!
I'm glad you like it.
Until now I'm using 2 textures, one for the red parts and one for the purple parts, the size is 4096x4096. The textures were made in photoshop combining a few textures from this grate website (http://www.cgtextures.com/)
Later one I'll probably make some specific textures for bullets holes, blood maybe, I don't know right now.
About the purplish colour, I had some doubts my self but I wanted something a bit different and I was inspired by the scrin alien race from c&c, now as i stated above, the final animation will have the same matrix green look as the image but that will be done in post.
Zac, i'll post the scene tomorrow i thik, it's really basic and simple.

here is the render tree, nothing fancy, t2s shaders are doing all the job :P

Now, about the cables... it was a matter of design/look vs function and i balanced more towards the looks (taking also in consideration the 2d image drawn by Michael were you can see some cables out) I know that in the real world things will be different but sometimes the look is more important than the function (at least in the virtual world :P )

Awesome work Adrian. I love the grime which gives the impression of a dirty camera lens. One of those things that bring so much to a image.

thanks mate!
I start working at the second character. The perspective will be similar to the one from cloverfield or to a FPS so only the arms and the gun will be seen. The fingers are not done yet!

Really cool modeling!

Please- share a wire frame with us- just a screen capture will do. Any one who models anything knows that seeing those wires is where the magic of understanding begins!

How did you do the arm hair btw?

What shaders did you use???I like very much!!!

Sorry for my english!!!

Adrian Lazar
05-22-2008, 07:38 AM
Hi guys!
Hair on the arm is done with the standard xsi hair :) but I need to make a texture map to drive the density of the hair because now is evenly distributed.
For the shaders I heavily rely on T2S Illumination, the arm has the standard SSS shader that ships with XSI.

Here is a wireframe of an older version (nothing to be proud of, if I would take more time I could manage better the polygon density)

Hi guys!

Thanks Ewald!

Sorry for the lack of updates but I was busy working at the environment after-hours.
There are a lot of objects to model and to texture and I only have 1-3 hours to work every day and that's why things are going a bit slow. Also scene management is getting quite heavy.

Anyway, there are still A LOT of object to make, like buildings in ruins, a lot of bigger debris from buildings but also from other robots/ships, some distant fighting space crafts, some explosions, a few smoke columns, fire from the broken gas pipe, the distant background buildings and sky, some anti-aircraft missiles and anti-aircraft machine-guns (behind the buildings) ant the list goes on...

This is what I have so far:

Oh, I've forgot to mention... what you are seeing in the firs picture is the starting position of the soldier, he will run to the robot (that can be seen in the print-screen images) and there the fight will take place.

The street level I think is ready, after I'll have an animation draft probably I'll move around some objects or I'll create new ones. Also, after all the elements will be done (buildings etc. ) I'll work some more at the compositing

Next are the buildings. Tomorrow a small animation will be ready where some objects will more visible (like the dust or the background smoke and sparks)

http://www.reactive4.com/stuff/bug_robot/oras_wip5.jpg

and some new print-screens:

and this is how I've split the scene in render passes (because the polygon number at render time exceeded 8 million I had to split the colour in 3 layers.

Amazing!! I like the detail

What are the small particles that flying up the sky in the video? My only crits about them is that if there are papers or other small and light objects flying in the wind, maybe you can add a bit of turbolence. And looking the speed of dust, could be nice to add in foreground some "flying objects".

Apart from that, it still a good and interesting job! ;)

Adrian Lazar
06-26-2008, 06:02 AM
Hey Zac, that was the first name that came in my mind when I was looking to name that building :D (I'm an Iron Man fan)

Hey Loki, you are right, those things from the video don't look too good, that supposed to look like ash but I still have to work at that. I added some paper (white) flying from the buildings but I'm not sure that can be spotted in this still frames.

Anyway, a small update, I still have to add a lot of details on this buildings and also I have to add some distant background buildings.

First and foremost let me just say it is absolutely amazing work.

Amazing stuff bro.

Cheers and good luck finalising it.

Thanks guys! Sorry for the late response! No matte-painting, all the buildings are 3d because I was afraid that it won't look good with the camera movement.

And here is a wip animation done by digeijohn, i like very very much, i hope that you like it to:

Hi guys!

The animation is almost done. DigeiJohn still has a few things to fine-tune.

I'm working right now at the buildings from the side. Also I have some explosions to do, riffle and shotgun fire for the solider, machine-gun fire for the robot, the broken rocket-launcher, the nuke rocket and other minor things. I hope that at the end of September the animation will be done, rendered and composed.

I recommend you to download the original video from vimeo page because the online version is very bad compressed.

We have very very little time to work on our animation but we keep on going.
This is the solider animation.
There's still a bit to work when the shotgun fires, what do you think?
I recommend that you download the original quicktime movie from vimeo for better quality.

Thanks Leo and Zac!
That's the final render for the solider, I rendered out from XSI 23 passes and compose them in post. It took ~ 72h on 5xQuadCore pc's for 2107 frame, 1280x720 size

Hey Zac, yes, I'm using (still learning) ICE. At first I intended to use 3dsmax & afterburn for vfx effects but now I've decided to go with ICE even if I need more time to learn how to use it.

Very nice indeed!

How are you getting along with ICE as compared to what you previously intended to use for the explosion?

Cheers!

Adrian Lazar
10-15-2008, 09:15 AM
Thanks!
I find ICE more flexible, for simple stuff the setup takes longer (if you don't save a compound to be used as a starting point) but you can do a lot more that afterburn + particle flow. The BA shaders are great, render fast, just takes a while to learn how to use them (i still do)

And here is a small update.
This is the starting point of the solider, the ship (or what we can see from his pov).
Here the audio will play a very important role, some heavy engines at work, steam, tremble etc...

I really don't like the jerky motion of the camera. It's really too jumpy and quick, hard to read. If you look at a normal FPS, or the Killzone CG trailer they showed, the motion is quick, but still fluid and readable.

But good job on the robot.

I'm sure it will make more since when everything is in the scene, are you gonna blur the camera movements and do the focusing blur?

Adrian Lazar
10-23-2008, 01:08 AM
Zac, you are right about the blood, it's still wip and does not look good right now. Motion blur I already use, it's made in post because from 3d take like forever :D, about using DOF I don't know right now, I'll have to see everything rendered.
Zafar, thank you!
Carl, thank you for your opinion, as I said before, it a combination between a 3d shooter and Cloverfield. I belive that when everything will be rendered it will look fine.

Zac-Donald
10-23-2008, 09:57 PM
Yeah DoF, slipped my mind, couldn't think of the word.

Is there going to be more camera effects (like blacking and whiting out)?
And in some games it blurs everything (including the guns and stuff) when the camera is jerked a lot (just giving my ideas.)

As i said before really great work and i an impatient about final results.
After i saw great works like that i want to use XSI too much but there is no chance on osx :(

On last video the blood that appear after damage , it looks to simple on this great work.
I think that if you improve it , it will be better ;)

Thanks Zac and Zoom, I'll see what effects I'll add after all the 3d is rendered.

Here is an update:
I recommend you download the original file from the vimeo page.

TO DO LIST:
- smoke collums in the background and on the side of the road
- the explosion from the robot rocket that hits the wall
- blood in the foreground when he is hit
- blood on the ground when he is hit
- the fragments from the first explosion have a weird rotation + i want to add some debris that resemble with his ship
- debris with fire (optional)
- the hair on the hands need to be redone
- blood on the solider hands after he is hit (optional)
- blood on the school bus
- more background buildings to fill the empty spaces (the smoke columns will help at this also)
- more work at the nuclear explosion (at the flare)
- the nuclear mushroom + the matte painting with the city in ruins
- some other minor tweaking

Head movement in the first half is stiff/limited.
Reload/pump action and the recoil looks off.

Those are the things that I noticed the most.
