Edit : 14/04/08
Added latest images to initial post.
I've started developing work for our company ShineFX's portfolio.
This project is a skateboarder character. A fully detailed high
res model that would used in film and commercials. Progress will be posted
here for comments and ideas. After the modeling and texturing are
completed, the character and board shall be rigged and final renders
done in an action shot.
The focus is on accuracy, detail and great photoreal renders.
The software is XSI and photoshop, zbrush being used for some
details and cloth sculpting.
I hope you enjoy the progress.
The first images of the skateboard.

looking amazing so far :O , nice ball-bearings, is there really a point to modeling them though? I can't wait to see some rendered pics for this.

Ewald:
Cheers mate!, it's my favourite too. I simply love those exploded views in car manuals.
giant551:
Thanks!, I'm glad it looks like that. Detail was important for this project as....
Zac-Donald:
The board is so detailed becuase it would be sold as a complete asset ready for demonstration animations of how skateboards work. Image it as a 3d alternative to this;

River :
Thanks, glad you like it so far.
Leo :
Thanks for stopping by, it's definitely a challenge working on a small scale, close up demand more texturing that expected.
I'm glad the next project won't need such closeups. :)
Here is the first rendered image.

Looks really amazing! the reflection on the metal looks weird for how beat up it is, and I'd expect some grim around were the trucks connect to the board, normally doesn't the metal dent the wood with a lot of use?

Look at what the trucks left

Thanks again river. I especially worked on the shaders for this.
Zac : I'm glad you like it. Though the skateboard is not new, it has perhaps been used for about 1-2 weeks. There would be no grime, or wear into the wood where the trucks have been. Not this early, but your right, a little more would help sell the fact it's connected to the board tightly. The board in your image is considerably older also, and not what I was aiming for.
Wheels to come! :)

Yeah that was the best image I could find with google images in 5minutes but yeah, a very little would help sell it, to my eyes it stood out almost as "floaty" how it is, I really like the look of the board though
Very nice work over materials and render engine, congrats buddy!
this is one of those images which would get my wife to come to me and ask: "okay, is this 3d or is it real?" ;)

Here are some updates.
These are renders of specific parts from the skateboard, used as render tests for the shaders and textures used in the final images.

very realistic mate, maybe just tone down the bump on the ball bearings a little, just a thought as i don't think they would pit like that. They tend to go dull when they wear.
very impressive though:clap:

I really like this last render mate.
Especially how it's presented, the board and the parts feel like they have weight in the picture.
It really shows your putting quality time into this project.
If you want some crits. I could say the board surface looks very crisp and new (the sandpaper I mean) compared to the weathered weels.
But you know that's just crit for the sake of crit'n, and I'm not exactly a board expert.
Keep it up mate.
ciao,
Fred

Guys,
First off, this is turning into a great community. The people around here are top notch. I'm glad to be a part of it.
Secondly. I'm getting married in 5 days!, So I won't be around after that as much, for a few days at least :).
After that i'm off on my honeymoon for 3 weeks. I'll be semi-inactive during that time. Then right back onto the project.
In the meantime,
2 new images.

Damn that's sexy, it looks photo-realistic! You should start doing some Girl decks since they always have some good art on the bottom.

MmAaXx Thanks!, The textures were good fun to make. Coca-Cola Thanks, It should be photo real. I agree girl decks are great, and I will be changing the deck design in the future, in forthcoming images. Photon Thanks Photon!, SketchWork :) Im glad you like it, Here is a new image for you:.

Creative crits:
As someone who used to skate for about 2.5 years, he's very spot on for a two-week old deck. Though there's one thing in my mind that doesn't add up and it has to do with similar components that you're talking about; the washers are too dirty for the age of the trucks and the hardware is a little too scratched because who doesn't spend 5 bucks on new hardware when it's a brand new setup. As for the king-pin nut, you may want to flatten the edge that gets grinded down and as for the texture, I don't know about you but I didn't usually fiddle around with my king-pin nut too much. In fact, I just tightened it as much as I could and that never scratched it as much as the one you have there. Those are the things I found that didn't add up for me.

No real crits on the work ... It just looks great...
but a couple o' comments....
First it's good to see your doing subDs to do a mechanical piece... (unless I am mistaken) ... I have used this method for some time and find it works really well... most of my stuff (for real money) is mechanical illustrations.... So it's good to see such a good piece done in this method...
Second this piece brings up a good idea that I think we might all take to heart...
that is .... taking a fairly simple object and work it and work it until we achieve that exacting realistic look .... it seems like a good practice exercise that we might all should do some time....
What I'm getting at is your piece here is very inspiring to see
I hope I can make an attempt at something similar soon just for the modeling and texturing practice...
so very good piece...
excellent idea....
p.s... last time I tried to skate board all the knicks and scrapes ended up on the end of my nose... (the board never got a scratch)

Thanks coca cola. Your right about the mix of components. The washers certainly do look a lot older than the deck itself. If i re-render in future, 'll most likely work on making the king pin and bolts a lot newer. Thanks for your comments.
norvman : Thanks ever so much for your thoughts, I agree with you, it's worth the challenge to appreciate the complexity of something that appears so simple. It's a good exercice and I'm happy with the result.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments, crits and support.
I finished the model, and put it up on turbosquid for sale, along with a couple of other model bank sites. Part of my new business side of shinefx, selling complete 3d models.
Thanks.

As a former budget skater, I used to recycle whatever I could. Heck, I've even recycled grip tape.
I do think the grommets are a little too white and clean. There is the one image wear the grip tape just doesn't seem to fit; maybe too bumpy and defined?
That's all I have. Awesome work. Very realistic.
