Well that's coming along rather nicely, good job. Where are you getting the reference for the mechanical details such as the landing gear and so on?

that would be 'Sea King', not seaking. :-)

that would be 'Sea King', not seaking. :-)

Thanks for the grammar lesson Kim much appreciated.

I worked as an engineer on various variants of the SEA KING for about 13 years so i have a little insider knowledge of the aircraft so it makes the modeling process a little easier:)

But with every aircraft i do i spend a lot of time gathering reference material before i start as most of the time the blueprints are not very good. So i do a lot of the detail work from lots of photographs. But i find thats part of the fun trawling through websites finding photographs:detective:. Here's a few links i kind of find useful

http://aircraftwalkaround.hobbyvista.com/

http://www.airliners.net/

http://www.the-blueprints.com/

Thanks for the nice comments guys. If anyone is interested in this type of modeling feel free to give me a shout.

Amazing detailed work. Can't wait to see the finished product!

I was looking for blueprints of military vehicles recently, thanks for the links.

You know my opinion: great work Paul!

02-26-2008, 04:30 PM
Paul, even thought it works as you have it, I was wondering why you didn't put one more loop around the hole for a bit more control and 'just in case' modeling happenstance stuff?

This is in regards to 2nd image, 1st post.

Hey Marek great to see you here!! its about time you stun the guys here with your level of detail:biggrin:

Jase well i don't know really it just works, but if i was to be truthful with you i had a real nightmare with the undercarriage leg it was a pig to model:online2long:

Anyway i'm battling with the rotor head as we speak i'll post up something in the next day or so.

thanks for your comments guys

Love the details!

Thanks for the posts guy's. Well started blocking out the head now the basic shape is getting there its not going to be an exact replica as the real head is too complex for what i need.

Still needs a fair bit of work but its a start:biggrin:

Impressive work giant551, Very inspiring. I love your attention to detail. Must have been a good experience working with the sea king for those years. She's a beautiful machine.

Thanks Shine, to be honest with you I have fond memories of the Seaking but it was a bit of a pain to work on and very dirty we used to joke that if it stopped leaking hydraulic oil you knew there was a major problem LOL.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y248/giant551/0305008.jpg

I enjoyed working on the Merlin much more a nice and clean and most of the systems are easy to get at:cowboy:

cheers more updates soon!

Well great, really looking forward to those updates. do you have any close up pictures of the part your modeling right now to post alongside?

Hey giant551,

I'm almost amazed by the crazy level of detail you put into your work! It is impossible to look at such great modeling and not imagine all the fantastic animations that could come out of them. Leaving them for stills only is a sin! Unless of course, you have a major project you haven't told us about... :sailor:

Well a little update as i had the weekend off:biggrin: before back to work tomorrow. Anyway got the head finished to what i need for this project.

I will be doing some animation in this project later on:wink: Anyway next up the blades and into the cockpit i think

Hey Giant551,
You should consider recording a tutorial (to merchandise or otherwise). Keep it up!!

well Leo i did do a little modeling tutorial for a little WW2 fighter a little while back now, its not the best tutorial in the world but i can post the links if you want. The trouble is with producing tutorial vids they take so long to do. But what i could do is for my next one do a sort of step by step thread so people can follow along if they wish?

Anyway ive finished the modeling now the 2 variants i have done are the Mk5 search and Rescue and the Mk7 ASaC Airborne Surveillance and Area Control both in service with the Royal Navy. So next step is the UV's woo hoo:punk:

What makes this thread so unique is that this is created by someone who knows everything about the heli, and at the same time has great ability to make it in 3d. It's modeled carefully with great attention to details.

Usually we see 3d-vehicle only based on blueprint and are made by hobbyists (like me) who don't know much about the product inside-out.

That's why I follow it closely and enjoy every updates...

Hey Giant551,

As for the link to your WW2 aircraft tut, that's a definite yes! Thanks so much. :)

I can imagine what a pain it must be to record video tuts, specially in regards to consistency throughout the lessons. I've done 5-10 min tuts (not 3D related) in the past and it was always very complicated.

Your idea of documenting your next project in a thread is very much appreciated, Sir! Nevertheless, I'm a bit afraid it might turn out to be a "Making of" of sorts, on steroids. While I know it would be way too much to ask of you to do something akin to what can be found in "The Art of XSI (http://www.cgtoolkit.com/artofxsi.htm)", maybe you could shoot for happy balance between both.

Again, regardless of format, if you ever decide to merchandise your XSI skills rest assured you'll have a faithful client in me.

Best,
Leo.

hello guys, well its been a while since an update but you know how it is! Ive started cracking on with the textures now still a long, long way to go but it will give you an idea of the first paint job.

Anyway i want to get this one done in the next week or so, so i will start pulling my finger out i promise!!

Considering you're planning on an animation, I was wondering if you already have or are looking into having a crew there.
Keep it up!

Here's the links to the tutorial i did on the WW2 fighter. I don't claim it to be the best tutorial in the world, i did it a while ago now its more of a video diary of my XSi learning curve but your welcome to it

Thank you, Sir! Very much appreciated. :)

I'll start downloading right away and I'll let you know what I'll manage to come up with after going through it. Though it will sit for a while in line after a few Digital Tutors and 3DMastermind stuff.... ;)

Hi,firstly thanks a lot for the tutorial:)The way you put the blueprints in the tutorial,is this the standart way you model?how you manage to model correctly (as size) all the inner parts of a highly detailed model? And one last question - i'm trying to find good blueprints for F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, any ideas where i can search, except the sites you have posted?Sorry for asking so much:)thanks in advance

Its they way i do all my aircraft:D What i normally do is model the basic shape using the blueprints and the use as many photo's of the subject as a can get to do all the details. I will spend a fair bit of time researching the project and gathering photo's. There are some great sites for reference walkarounds for aircraft and they are a life saver!
