User's names are already visible under their avatars in threads but elsewhere in the site the alias is used.

I think that having users identified by their names and somehow forgoing aliases might be a good idea for fostering an environment of polite and adult discussion. The internet already provides a level of removal from the conversation, an alias only compounds this.

Having users use their real names would somewhat bring back a level of responsibility and transparency.

We already ask for one's real name, and this being a public internet site, do you have any suggestions for how we might verify that a person is using their real name without going through a painful manual approval process?

I understand the need for a high quality site and greater responsibility on the part of the poster. But in my years of running CGSociety, I have never seen a good way of enforcing true identities without basically having a private invite-only forum or mailing list like 3D Pro or some of the others out there.

We also have a team of moderators whose role is to police the site of miscreants. If you see any problems, you can always report the post.

We also have the ability to set up private forums, and this is something that we might do specifically for our studio customers who want that added level of privacy and responsibility. Let me know if this interests you.

Cheers

Indeed, one has to trust that the user entered legitimate information upon subscription and to police this would be much to great a burden, especially considering that going the private route isn't really an option.

If the different uses of the alias in the site design (above avatar, on the index page, in the uploads) could be replaced by the real name that would already be interesting.

i understand and i didn't thought of really enforcing such a law.
on our own board, which is very small and only frequented by our freelancers and clients i insist on real names and make ppl correct them. that is not an option here i know. but alone the rule of using real names might get something rolling that might lead to some kind of self cleaning process :)
if more than half of the users use their real names, they will push others to do the same.
there is no safety that nobody will cheat. but thats not important. its important to show professional attitude and the good ppl wont cheat :)
of course that doesn't replace moderation.

it sounds interesting, but i have no idea if it will really work. maybe worth a tryout. i for myself would like to join there. on the other hand it might just be a mirror of the mailing list which cleans itself by the type of problems that are discussed there and which are very hard to understand for the average hobbiest ;)

Sorry, but I have to disagree! The user's responsibility for his/her posts remains the same whether using nicknames or not. And many people wouldn't be deterred writing stuff administrators still would have to remove, even if they had to use their real name. To try bringing "back a level of responsibility and transparency" in this manner seems quite a futile endeavour... But then again, I'm no admin!!! :D
