Very cool tutorial written by Dan Waters, former C# dev and Microsoft Academic Developer Evangelist.

GuitarMatey is a 3D game for the Xbox that allows you to improvise guitar music with the accompaniment of a backing track. Five pirates dance for you as you play the game. While GuitarMatey lacks a real objective or purpose, it is perfect to help you learn about developing 3D games for free using XNA and our partner tools. Learning how to build GuitarMatey will teach you:
How to build a simple 3D model in SOFTIMAGE|XSI Mod Tool
How to build a more complex skinned, rigged & animated character model in SOFTIMAGE|XSI Mod Tool for use in an XNA game
Project setup for XNA and XSI projects
Pipeline & workflow between XSI and XNA
How to animate a skinned XSI model in XNA using the XNAXSIRuntime library provided for free by SOFTIMAGE
How to creating and managing sound and audio using the DirectX XACT tool
How to handle input from the controller
How to prep an XNA PC game for XBOX 360
How to deploy an XNA game to the Xbox through the Creators Club
And many, many nuances and "gotchas" that will help make your development experience 1000% smoother.>> Check it out here << (http://blogs.msdn.com/dawate/archive/2008/02/05/building-a-3d-game-in-xna-from-scratch-free-video-tutorial-series-now-available.aspx)

I have an old copy.. XSI 4.0 Foundation.. would I be able to pull this off? I'm just a hobbyist with not a lot of dough to burn on a new version..

If you are a hobbyist, why not try the XSI 6 Modtool, it is much less restrictive than the old EXP versions, plus you get most of the latest and greatest features for free. That is if you are not doing any commercial work.

how much does this version run? do you get to deduct the cost of a previously purchased program?

XSI 6 Modtool is free for non-commercial usage.

hi, I'm new, I came across the thread and I wanted to know - what input devices are you using to play guitar? can a mod be created to use an actual guitar as an input tool into the xbox? do you have it already? let me know? thanks so much. blackdiamond13 @ Jemsite (http://www.jemsite.com)

Hello everyone.

I am using this tutorial to help me get started with XNA. I just got my new computer, and I was planning on getting Visual Studio 2008. But in the beginning of the second video, he puts a lot of emphasis on creating the project in 2005. So here's my question: does the XSI/XNA pipeline function correctly with Visual Studio 2008, or should I stick with 2005?

Stick with 2005, the XSI->XNA pipeline still doesn't support VS2008 and XNA3(Which is Beta anyway)
