when i try use the portal light it get very splotchy, or so, doesnt look good at all...

looks like low quality FG or GI..

how do i make the portal light effect "smooth"??

edit: like this
(only 10000 photons and low number of FG rays, but it looks the same with high settings)

Ive not used XSI 7 yet so ive not played with the portal lights, but it looks like the problem here is to to with your area shadows from your portal light not the amount of FG/ GI. Try upping the samples of your shadows or making your portal light slightly smaller in the window.

good luck

Hello!

A question - or two- (the answer doesn't really come on the manual ): when using a Portal Light it concentrates the photons through it, so (let's say I am using the physical sun) is it the Sun that is emitting the photons or the Portal light itself? If the portal light is used to emit the photons is it just using the Sun for the light information (color/haze....)? Or does the sun also have to emit photons?

The user guide is very clear but not deep enough sometimes. Maybe is just my English. I am experimenting myself but it takes long because it involves FG and GI and after so many region renders....

Thank you very much to whoever takes the time to answer this.

cool stuff, but try and reduce the size of your portal lights slightly, its a little trick which allows you to lower the samples slightly which gives you faster rendertimes.

I am trying to figure that out myself at the moment - so far I have tried to only emit photons from the Portal - the result seemed very dark as you can't control the intesity of the photons emitted.
When you try to up the multiplier of the portal, it results in massively overlit areas around
the windows - i tried to work around that by using the new mia_photographic_exposure
lensshader to tonemap things - here is what I have gotten so far:

Looks a bit too washed-out for my taste (as with most tonemapped images).
I will try emitting photons from the sun aswell after the weekend, and I appreciate every
bit of help and information. :)
