Limitations: Non-Commercial Use – Softimage|XSI 6 Mod Tool is restricted to non-commercial usage. XSI 6 Mod Tool files cannot be opened using the commercial XSI packages. 64,000 triangle export limit (per mesh) – Softimage|XSI 6 Mod Tool models are limited to 64,000 triangles at the time of export for each mesh in the scene. No rendering capabilities – designed to produce 3D assets for consumption in a game engine.

I heard they could.
If I hit QKEY and draw a box around the scene it renders something.

I think they're referring to the saving filetype of Mod Tool which is .exp, this filetype cannot be opened in other XSI packages, but you're still able to export scenes through Crosswalk which can be opened in other XSI packages.

Modtools is designed for Game Assets, and thus relies more on real-time shaders. As a result it lacks the Mental Ray render engine, which is why using the Render Region isn't really doing anything but rendering with OpenGL.

There's usually different ways of exporting assets into a form that can be opened by other versions of XSI (.obj, etc)
