I am having a "little" issue with the SPM/Dongle which is driving me nuts. I have been putting this off for a while now and simply shifted most of my work back into Maya, but I have had about enough of this (and Maya) and its time to deal with it. Perhaps someone can help me here.

I am pretty much constantly unable to start XSI, but there seems to be some real randomness about it. Here's the story:

I pretty much leave the dongle plugged in all the time, so sometimes XSI starts without a problem. Most of the times and especially after I unplug it and put it back in, I am referred to the license manager due to a "missing interactive license" and when I try to list or reinstall the license keys get this error:

******** List contents of KeyDataBase ********
SPM_FATAL ERROR (C:\spm\spm_keyib.exe) :
can't open port IBU for dongle type "SI0".

I tried everything in the Wiki and it didnt help. My system is recognizing the dongle alright as an iButton device, I turned off the Win64 firewall etc but the License Manager just wont access the dongle, it appears. This goes for all USB ports and I know its not a problem with my system as my LW dongle works fine on all USB ports unplugging and plugging it back in to my hearts desire.

Nothing short of completely restarting the machine several times and/or removing and reinstalling the software has helped so far and I am getting really tired of wasting my time trying to get the software to work, so some help here is really appreciated.

Cheers!

PS: As a final attempt, I just downloaded the separate SPM installer. If that doesnt work out, I am really clueless what to do next.

You should take this issue to support@softimage.com.

If you leave the dongle plugged in, and you still get intermittent "can't open port IBU for dongle type 'SI0' " errors, then that strongly suggests the dongle may be defective.

Reinstalling XSI or SPM generally won't help resolve this type of issue. I would focus on the dongle and dongle driver.

Thanks, Steve. I'll do that.

Did you get an answer to that one? I just got XSI 7 installed on a new 64b vista box, and it worked for a good 5 minutes. Now i'm getting exactly the same thing: license server cannot start: can't open port IBU for dongle type "SI0". Restarted a couple of times but same thing.

It's driving me crazy, so much time wasted...

Support tried their best, but the issue remains unclear.

The dongle driver had to be reinstalled on every single USB port of the machine, sometimes even twice. Now it appears to work (Keeping my fingers crossed), hence I repeated the process on other machines I use the software on. If that doesnt fix it for you, I'd say your dongle probably is defective.

Cheers and good luck!

Thanks! Somehow it works again. Crossing my fingers too :)
