When the bone gets flipped around 180 (at the knee) and reversed the direction, what is the solution to fix this, this mostly happens when i inadvertently straighten a leg. Whenever it happens know I delete the pose and start from scratch which is a pain.

hy
have you got an upvector for the chain by any chance?
if not you should definitively use one. if you already have, try and check the resolution plane on the chain properties, they might be off... however, animate the upvector as well otherwise you might be pushing the ik over it's limits.

Is this a way of fixing it or a way of making sure it doesn't happen if you do it before one starts to animate.

Hey, I wrote that article :)

To test the integrity of your rig...
1 Select both leg effectors "Biped_Rig.LeftFoot" & "Biped_Rig.RightFoot"
and move them down.
2 Get into "key character key set" mode (bottom right), instead of the default "key-marked parameters" and set the "key set" 2 little keys icon>"Set current" to "Biped_Rig.Biped" .
3 KEY
4 Move the 2 controlers up . On the default rig it will break the up-vector.

On a fixed rig (follow my steps here)
http://softimage.wiki.avid.com/index.php/PRB:_Legs_on_a_Biped_rig_pop_to_the_opposite_side
this should not happen.

I highly recommend that everyone do this before enveloping, if you use a preset Biped Rig set-up.

Do you guys know a method to fix a leg after it inverted itself ?
