I have a hair material which I have assigned to the Right eyebrow object. I then Ctrl+Drag the material onto the Left eyebrow object and the hair can be seen under the eyebrow objects in the Explorer but in the 3D view and Render view the hair is only visible on the original model. I tried this Ctrl+Drag method earier and found that the Explorer showed the hair material on both eyebrows but both instances were actually rendered on the Right eyebrow.

I'm confused as to how this should work. Am I going about this in the wrong way? I want to create one hair material and then apply it to both eyebrows. Should I group the eyebrow objects and apply the material to the group? It looks like the method I am trying should work... but doesn't

Any help gratefully received.

(Please excuse the pixelated attachment. Trying to squeeze the screen grab down to the 19K limit for attachments was tricky.)

ctrl+drag I think it's a copy operation... what you want is instance the same material to both eyebrowns isn't it? so you just drag the material from one hair obj to another.

If you wanna check, all materials are in "materials" in the explorer (put your mouse over an explorer window and press "m").
Ctrl+7 is also a good way to check who's using what...

I always use to select the hair object that I wanna assign the material and click Render>Material>Assign Material and then I pick the object that has the material that I want. It always works fine.

Thiago, thank you for taking the time to reply! Those are very helpful tips which I will be puting to good use very soon. Thanks again! :online2long:
-----------------

Edit: I just opened the Material Editor and Dragged the same hair material the at I used on the head onto the models that I am using as eyebrow hair emitters and this seems to work... (ish). I can see in the Explorer that the hair material is correctly assigned under the models but the hair guides are not showing up for the eyebrows even though they are visible for the hair on the scalp. Not sure how to make them visible or how to access the length variable. Any ideas?

Perhaps I will find the answer to this before anyone can reply but at the moment it's driving be batty!

I am trying to view the hair properties, the ones which allow me to adjust the total hairs drawn and the default length, but I'm just not finding them. I can see the properties for colour, by double clicking on the hair material in the Explorer, but those other hair propeties are hiding away somewhere. Can anyone help? Perhaps they are only available at the time the hair is created? Or maybe they have been frozen out?

Again, thanks for helping out a real newbie trying to learn the ropes as quickly as possible.

Edit: Sorted! Just me getting used to the interface.
XSI is amazing!

yep usually the default properties for an object is just select and press "enter" XSI will pop the PPG for that object.

If you wanna inspect the whole thing, then you press alt+enter.
couple more tips:
- ctrl+k is open local kinematics
- one click in the icon in the explorer (or two clicks in the name) will pop the PPG for that specific node.
- F3 is used all the time to inspect the current selection (if the object has synoptic you use shift+f3).

Tip about hair... you can inspect the geometry approximation node inside the hair object and subdivide the hair too. This way you can balance between hair "segments" in the hair PPG and geometry subdivision.
