Apologize ahead of time, moderators feel free to chastise me in public and remove my post if I have crossed the line posting this request. In addition I will be posting this message at XSI Base as well, sorry for the cross post.

I am about to go public with a new mental ray materials repository site that will cover XSI as well as Max and Maya. Currently I have Jeff Patton on board for Max and Jared Martin for Maya, but do not have anyone on board for XSI. I own Essentials and may have to do it (Quick run at it and dotxsi file from Max 2008 via CrossTalk crashes XSI 6.5), but running sites and a business has left me with no extra time to become a guru in any one program, so I want to find someone very proficient in XSI.

It is a non-paying gig, but a chance for someone to help give back to the community and perhaps rise as a recognized authority in the field. Initially translating the Material Lab into XSI (we have Max versions of ‘Hard Surface’ and ‘Cloth’ and will soon be done with ‘Translucent and SSS’ MatLabs) and setting it up so that it renders out similar to the Max and Maya versions. From there I would give them as much rope as needed to hang themselves! LOL Kidding aside, they would be able to add content like tutorials, articles, reviews, we could host a blog for them, they can contribute pretty much anything that helps the ‘mental ray’ community as well as XSI. There articles and the menu would link back to their personal sites to help promote them and their other endeavors. It may be that more than one XSI guru is interested and that is fine, I am just looking for individuals to help out with the endeavor and to provide a strong XSI presence at the site.

We are not trying to set up a whole new community, there are plenty in existence and I have one already to maintain, I don't think the Internet needs another at this time. What we do plan is to have materials, tutorials, perhaps blogs, news and whatever makes sense for a great resource for the MR community without competing with the general communities already present, just a supplement to them. That is the reason I made the repository separate from 3DAllusions, people can participate even if they are affiliated with other communities without any conflict of interest so to speak, it is a separate resource for the CG community without any real affiliations. Of course there are some links to 3DA and I have set aside forums there to support MrMaterials, but it is it's own identity without any real affiliation with any other sites or software companies.

If anyone is interested, has suggestions or would like to contribute, feel free to to email or PM me, rather than put an email up and get even more SPAM lets say that TheAllusionist paired up with my online portal 'at' 3dallusions.com will go directly to me. We should be going public very soon.

The site hasn't gone public yet, the content is fake to allow us to troubleshoot, if we are lucky and able to we will start adding some real content this weekend and go public the first of next week.

The images shown are of the MatLabs we have set up for Max (translucent/SSS version not done yet), we still have to get Maya (being worked on now) and XSI versions done. Hence the request for community involvement and the search for a guru ;)

We are trying to provide well thought out scenes as well as a well thought out site, so please bear with us as this takes some time.

The 'well thought out' MatLabs are taking a wee bit more time than anticipated, we are still moving forward. Just waiting for the HDRI vendor to give approval to HDRI we want to use and then translations will be completed and we can get this party started! ;)

We will be officially launching Monday, but we have all the MatLabs (Material Scenes for testing and setting up materials) up and I will be uploading a ton of Textures and Max materials this weekend. I haven't had a chance to do XSI materials yet but we will have a lot of Max materials and it would be great to see XSI content, so anybody who would like to contribute it would be greatly appreciated. If nothing else stop by in a couple weeks after we have it all going smoothly and hopefully have some decent XSI content. Hope to see you there!

I was running into problems with my dedicated server hosting company, so I just ended up buying (Lease to Own actually) a server and housing it at a co-location facility here in Seattle. A little over a week ago I got the transfer complete and all my sites working right (fingers crossed). I then moved forward in finding a Maya person to help out and some other items to promote/improve the site.

I am actually working on the full resolution Commercial textures that Arroway donated, right at the moment, 20 of them and it took me a while to find a Maya person to help out and do the Maya versions as well. Then we will start releasing those, maybe one a week.

After that I will try to put up some other XSI ones since I finished up with the initial release and upload of the Max textures I wanted to put up. You really need to ask your self and the members of the XSI community if the XSI part of any endeavor is basically dead before it starts due to lack of participation. I have worked hard to get the infrastructure up, I can't do it all and all at once. Have you uploaded any material presets?

Basically IF I bust my butt and fill the XSI portion up, it will still be dead if nobody else participates, we have MatLabs there and I have actually revised them three times as I find little things that will make it more consistant with the Max and Maya versions. I look at this type of endeavor as something I just have to put the time into and keep trudging along, eventually it will amount to something, it would just get there faster if I had some help ;) Remember this is an on the side effort to all involved we have careers and lifes to squeeze in.

In short, not dead in my eyes, maybe a waste of time and a dead project in the eyes XSI community. On top of it all some bad recent news on the XSI front that probably stole the wind out of everybodies sails ;)
